A RESOLUTION

Designating April 5, 2011, as "Pitt Day" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is an

3

internationally recognized center of learning and research, with

4

sites at the Pittsburgh main campus and at Bradford, Greensburg,

5

Johnstown and Titusville locations; and

6

WHEREAS, Referred to as the Pittsburgh Academy, Pitt was

7

founded in 1787 by Hugh Henry Brackenridge in a log cabin on the

8

developing western frontier and chartered that year by act of

9

the General Assembly; and

10

WHEREAS, Pitt has operated since 1966 as a State-related

11

university of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education; and

12

WHEREAS, Pitt's current enrollment includes more than 26,000

Pennsylvania resident students; and

2

WHEREAS, Pitt's Pennsylvania resident students have compiled

3

eight Boren Scholarships, seven Goldwater Scholarships, 14

4

Fulbright Scholarships, four Freeman Asia Scholarships, one

5

Churchill Scholarship, one Gates Cambridge Scholarship, six

6

Humanity in Action Scholarships, two Udall Scholarships and one

7

Truman Scholarship; and

8

WHEREAS, Pitt has been ranked in the very top cluster of our

9

nation's public research universities for the fourth consecutive

10

year; and

11

WHEREAS, With nearly $800 million in National Institutes of

12

Health (NIH) grant funding awarded to Pitt this year, the

13

university ranks fifth among institutions nationwide in

14

competitive NIH grants; and

15

WHEREAS, NIH grant funding supports 28,000 jobs and provides

16

a 4-to-1 return on Commonwealth investment; and

17

WHEREAS, Pitt has been recognized by Kiplinger's and The

18

Princeton Review as a best value in public higher education; and

19

WHEREAS, Pitt ranks top among public institutions for

20

dramatically strengthening the economy and quality of life in

21

its home communities according to "Saviors of Our Cities: A

22

Survey of Best College and University Civic Partnerships"; and

23

WHEREAS, Pitt's annual regional economic contribution exceeds

24

$2 billion; and

25

WHEREAS, Pitt employs more than 12,600 residents of this

26

Commonwealth; and

27

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania resident Pitt alumni number at 267,000;

28

therefore be it

29

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April

30

5, 2011, as "Pitt Day" in Pennsylvania.
