INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 5, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing April 29, 2011, as "Arbor Day"; promoting public

2

participation in the celebration; and further recognizing the

3

value of trees to our environment.

4

WHEREAS, The tree has proved to be a valuable component of

5

our environment by providing us with natural aesthetics for

6

landscaping, a biological tool to control water and wind

7

erosion, a renewable source of food, fuel and lumber for man, a

8

habitat for birds and wildlife and a natural producer of oxygen

9

and water through the process of transpiration; and

10

WHEREAS, The original "Arbor Day" was observed with the

11

planting of more than a million trees; and

12

WHEREAS, Scientists, environmentalists, foresters and

13

government officials throughout the world are increasingly

alarmed about the significant clearing and destruction of the

2

forests of the world and are now exploring the feasibility of

3

large-scale reforestation programs as a means of preventing a

4

possible adverse climate change such as global warming; and

5

WHEREAS, "Arbor Day" has been designated by many states as a

6

time to recognize the importance of trees to our environment;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, "Arbor Day" is now celebrated throughout the United

9

States and in countries around the world; and

10

WHEREAS, The last Friday in April is commonly held to be the

11

day to celebrate "Arbor Day"; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby recognize

13

April 29, 2011, as "Arbor Day"; and be it further

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives ask that citizens

15

and communities throughout this Commonwealth, individually and

16

collectively, engage in the celebration of "Arbor Day" by

17

planting trees in appropriate public places as a source of

18

future enjoyment and civic pride; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be conveyed to the

20

Governor and the Senate to solicit their support of this

21

recognition.
