A RESOLUTION

Honoring Emmaus, Pennsylvania, on the occurrence of its 250th

2

anniversary.

3

WHEREAS, In the early 1730s, German immigrants began settling

4

onto lands acquired by William Penn; and

5

WHEREAS, By 1734, a Germanic log cabin was built in

6

Maguntsche as a temporary shelter for these settlers; and

7

WHEREAS, The Shelter House, "Zufluchtshause" in German,

8

remains a prominent historic site in Emmaus and is believed to

9

be the oldest continuously inhabited structure in the Lehigh

10

Valley; and

11

WHEREAS, The new village was laid out in 1759, and that same

12

year Andres Giering built the first house; and

13

WHEREAS, In 1761, Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg

named the settlement "Emmaus"; and

2

WHEREAS, The discovery of iron ore in the mid-1800s

3

significantly changed the area; and

4

WHEREAS, The east branch of the Philadelphia and Reading

5

Railroad made its appearance, and by April 20, 1859, the first

6

train was heard rolling through town; and

7

WHEREAS, On August 1 of that same year the Village of Emmaus

8

incorporated as the Borough of Emmaus and accordingly, in 2009,

9

celebrates 150 years as a borough as well as 250 years as a

10

town; and 

11

WHEREAS, Industry continued to flourish as the first blast

12

furnace was "blown in" in 1869; and

13

WHEREAS, The heart of every community is its downtown and

14

Emmaus' is especially rich in character and history with the

15

Moravian Church on Main Street remaining a landmark in the

16

community; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Emmaus,

18

Pennsylvania on the occurrence of its 250th anniversary.
