A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of May 2012 as "Melanoma/Skin Cancer

2

Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Most people do not realize that the skin is the

4

largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many

5

essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting

6

internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic

7

functions; and 

8

WHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute has estimated the

9

total direct cost associated with the treatment of melanoma in

10

2010 was $2,360,000,000; and

11

WHEREAS, Current estimates are that one in five Americans

12

will develop skin cancer in his lifetime; and

13

WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, more than

14

123,590 new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United

15

States this year; and

16

WHEREAS, More than 2,000,000 cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer

17

are diagnosed in the United States each year; and

WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma

2

is the most common form of cancer for young adults between 25

3

and 29 years of age and the second most common form of cancer

4

for adolescents and young adults between 15 and 29 years of age;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, Melanoma and skin cancer are highly treatable if

7

detected early; and 

8

WHEREAS, The American Academy of Dermatology's Melanoma/Skin

9

Cancer Detection and Prevention Month is a public education

10

service designated to promote the prevention and early detection

11

of melanoma and other skin cancers; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of May 2012 as

13

"Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month" in

14

Pennsylvania.
