A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ALMA BAKER ULMER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Alma Baker Ulmer will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on June 15, 2013; and

Whereas, born on June 15, 1913, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, the daughter of the late Calhoun Baxter and Carrie Felder Baxter and step-daughter of the late Marie Daman Baxter, Alma Baker was a hardworking, obedient, and God-fearing young person, helping to raise her siblings and her step-siblings; and

Whereas, a devoted member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, she attended school in Orangeburg, where she excelled as a student and learned to sew and make arts and crafts; and

Whereas, at the age of nineteen, she met and married her beloved husband, James Ulmer, a farmer, and together they reared ten children. James was her first and only love, and they were married for some sixty years until his passing in 1992. They were blessed with thirty-five grandchildren, sixty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, after her marriage, she continued to keep God first and became a faithful member of the Andrew Chapel Baptist Church where she led the children's choir. She steadfastly reminded her children to thank God for the many blessings that He bestowed upon them during hard times, as well as happy ones; and

Whereas, during the Great Depression, she made clothing for the family and others in the community. She made arts and crafts and played games with the family. A feared batter in baseball, she could hit a home-run every time; and

Whereas, determined that their children would earn an education and have opportunities in life, Mrs. Ulmer has seen nine of her children complete college. In addition to her own children, she cared for many foster children; and

Whereas, she studied midwifery and served as a midwife. Her love of travel has taken her to numerous states across the United States, and she has traveled to Europe and cruised to the Bahamas; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina, whose love, compassion, thoughtfulness, and kindness have sustained so many, at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
