A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to an exemption for teachers and retired teachers from the |
|
payment of a fee for registration of a motor vehicle. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter J, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, |
|
is amended by adding Section 502.458 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 502.458. TEACHER AND RETIRED TEACHER EXEMPTION. (a) |
|
In this section, "teacher" means a principal, supervisor, classroom |
|
teacher, school counselor, or other full-time professional |
|
employee who is required to hold a certificate issued under |
|
Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code. |
|
(b) A vehicle may be registered without payment if the |
|
vehicle is owned or leased by a person who is a teacher or a retired |
|
teacher. |
|
(c) An application for registration under Subsection (b) |
|
must be accompanied by proof of the applicant's entitlement to the |
|
exemption. The department shall adopt rules relating to the proof |
|
of entitlement to the exemption, which may include, for retired |
|
teachers, statements or other communications issued by the Teacher |
|
Retirement System of Texas that evidence payment of an annuity from |
|
the system. |
|
SECTION 2. Section 502.458, Transportation Code, as added |
|
by this Act, applies only to an application submitted on or after |
|
the effective date of this Act. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
