A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to vehicle registration requirements for deployed active
  military personnel.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 502.0025, Transportation Code, is
  amended to read as follows:
         Sec. 502.0025.  EFFECT OF CERTAIN MILITARY SERVICE ON
  REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT. (a) This section applies only to a
  [motor vehicle that is owned by a] person who:
               (1)  is a resident of this state;
               (2)  is on active duty in the armed forces of the United
  States; and
               (3)  is stationed in or has been assigned to another
  nation under military orders.
         (b)  A person to whom this section applies:
               (1)  except as provided by Subsection (c), shall
  register a motor vehicle that the person owns under Section
  502.002(a); and
               (2)  is exempt from paying fees for vehicle
  registration or renewal of vehicle registration, not including a
  registration or renewal fee for a vehicle issued specialty or
  personalized license plates or any additional or optional fee
  authorized or imposed by this chapter.
         (c)  A person to whom this section applies is exempt from the
  registration requirement in Section 502.002(a) if:
               (1)  the person [; and (4)] has registered the vehicle
  or been issued a license for the vehicle under the applicable status
  of forces agreement by:
                     (A)  the appropriate branch of the armed forces of
  the United States; or
                     (B)  the nation in which the person is stationed
  or to which the person has been assigned; and [.]
               (2)  [(b)  Unless] the registration or license issued
  for the [a] vehicle has not been [described by Subsection (a) is]
  suspended, canceled, or revoked by this state as provided by law. [:
               [(1)  Section 502.002(a) does not apply; and]
         (d)  A [(2)  the] registration or license issued by the armed
  forces or host nation under Subsection (c)(1) remains valid and the
  motor vehicle may be operated in this state under that registration
  or license for a period of not more than 90 days after the date on
  which the vehicle returns to this state.
         SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
