military personnel. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 502.0025, Transportation Code, is | ||
amended to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 502.0025. EFFECT OF CERTAIN MILITARY SERVICE ON | ||
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT. (a) This section applies only to a | ||
[ |
||
(1) is a resident of this state; | ||
(2) is on active duty in the armed forces of the United | ||
States; and | ||
(3) is stationed in or has been assigned to another | ||
nation under military orders. | ||
(b) A person to whom this section applies: | ||
(1) except as provided by Subsection (c), shall | ||
register a motor vehicle that the person owns under Section | ||
502.002(a); and | ||
(2) is exempt from paying fees for vehicle | ||
registration or renewal of vehicle registration, not including a | ||
registration or renewal fee for a vehicle issued specialty or | ||
personalized license plates or any additional or optional fee | ||
authorized or imposed by this chapter. | ||
(c) A person to whom this section applies is exempt from the | ||
registration requirement in Section 502.002(a) if: | ||
(1) the person [ |
||
or been issued a license for the vehicle under the applicable status | ||
of forces agreement by: | ||
(A) the appropriate branch of the armed forces of | ||
the United States; or | ||
(B) the nation in which the person is stationed | ||
or to which the person has been assigned; and [ |
||
(2) [ |
||
for the [ |
||
suspended, canceled, or revoked by this state as provided by law. [ |

||
(d) A [ |
||
forces or host nation under Subsection (c)(1) remains valid and the | ||
motor vehicle may be operated in this state under that registration | ||
or license for a period of not more than 90 days after the date on | ||
which the vehicle returns to this state. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
