WHEREAS, Ida M. Steadman retired as principal cellist of the | ||
El Paso Symphony Orchestra on April 16, 2011, drawing to a close an | ||
extraordinary career with the ensemble that spanned more than half | ||
a century; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Steadman is a graduate of Texas Western | ||
College, and she earned her master of fine arts degree in | ||
performance from the University of Georgia; she joined EPSO as a | ||
flute player in 1957 and moved to the cello section the following | ||
year; she became assistant cellist in 1985 and the orchestra's | ||
principal cellist in 1987; and | ||
WHEREAS, In addition to her performing career, this talented | ||
musician has served as a teacher for the El Paso Independent School | ||
District for the past 40 years and plans to continue in her role as | ||
director of the orchestra at Coronado High School; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Steadman has further distinguished herself as a | ||
clinician or adjudicator for numerous events and organizations, | ||
including the Texas Tech Band and Orchestra Camp, the Colorado | ||
State Rocky Mountain Summer Music Camp, the Greater Southwest Music | ||
Festival, and the Colorado High School All-State String Orchestra; | ||
moreover, she served on the jury of a national cello competition in | ||
Ankara, Turkey; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Steadman's many achievements have been | ||
recognized with a lifetime membership in the Texas Parent Teacher | ||
Association, the Conquistador Award from the City of El Paso, and | ||
the Elizabeth Green School Educator Award from the American String | ||
Teachers Association; she was also honored as an outstanding former | ||
student by Burges High School, and she was selected to carry the | ||
Olympic torch for the 2002 Olympics; and | ||
WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Mrs. Steadman has enjoyed the | ||
love and support of her husband, Hane, as well as her children, | ||
Michael, Anita, Sid, and Russell; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ida Steadman's dedication, ability, and passion for | ||
music have greatly benefited the El Paso community, and she may | ||
indeed reflect with pride on her outstanding accomplishments as she | ||
looks forward to the next exciting chapter in her life; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Ida M. Steadman on her retirement | ||
from the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and extend to her sincere best | ||
wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mrs. Steadman as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
