R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life devoted to family, faith, and community drew |
|
to a close with the passing of Starr County commissioner Raul "Roy" |
|
Peña Jr. on June 17, 2017, at the age of 67; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on August 11, 1949, in Roma to Raul and Minerva |
|
Peña, Roy Peña grew up with the companionship of his brother and |
|
four sisters; after high school, he attended Pan American |
|
University, where he met the love of his life, Lucila Trevino; they |
|
graduated from the university in 1972 and were joined in matrimony |
|
on October 27, 1973; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Peña began his career as an educator in 1972 |
|
with the Roma Independent School District and went on to teach for |
|
La Joya ISD; he entered politics following his mother's death, in a |
|
bid to complete her term as a Starr County justice of the peace; |
|
after his election, he continued serving in that position for a |
|
total of 21 years; in 1998, he sought and won the office of county |
|
commissioner for Precinct 2, and he faithfully carried out his |
|
duties in that role for nearly two decades; among the many projects |
|
he worked on over the years, he considered his greatest |
|
achievements to be the development of the Starr County Memorial and |
|
Veterans Memorial Cemeteries; and |
|
WHEREAS, A dedicated leader and mentor, Mr. Peña was also a |
|
loving husband and the proud father of two children, Raul and |
|
Monica; his life was further enriched by the affection he shared |
|
with his cherished grandchildren, Analiza, Yamil, and Raul, and he |
|
additionally treasured the many friendships he made in the course |
|
of his work; and |
|
WHEREAS, Renowned for his steadfast integrity and his deep |
|
commitment to fairness and justice, Roy Peña will forever be |
|
remembered with admiration by all those who had the good fortune to |
|
know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Raul "Roy" Peña Jr. and extend sincere sympathy to all those who |
|
mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Peña. |
