A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate |
|
students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served |
|
in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall |
|
designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public |
|
schools. |
|
(b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate |
|
instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction |
|
may include: |
|
(1) information about persons who have served in the |
|
armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the |
|
geographic area in which the district is located; and |
|
(2) participation, in person or using technology, in |
|
age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites |
|
associated with a person who has served in the armed forces. |
|
(c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to |
|
promote Texas Military Heroes Day. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|
school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
