SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 483
WHEREAS, The Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum is celebrating
the 162nd anniversary of its construction in 2021; and
WHEREAS, Known as "Bonnie Castle" by its first occupant,
  Samuel Gallatin Smith, the historic building was erected in 1859;
it was originally a one-story house with four rooms, and it sat on
nine acres of wooded land; Franklin N. Gary bought the home at the
start of the Civil War and sold it to Dr. Samuel Adams Goodman in
1866; one year later, Dr. Goodman's son purchased the house; and
WHEREAS, Dr. William Jeffries Goodman moved into the
residence with his wife, Mary Priscilla Gaston, and through the
years, they added a second story in the Italianate architectural
style; their eldest child, Sallie Gertrude Goodman, lived in the
house throughout her life, and she and her husband, James H.
LeGrand, remodeled the house in 1926, adding massive two-story
columns and projecting circular porticos in the Classic Revival
  architectural style; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Goodman-LeGrand was the last direct heir to
live in the house, and upon her death in 1939, she bequeathed her
estate to the City of Tyler with instructions to maintain the
home and keep it open as a public museum; the city officially took
ownership in 1940, and in 2010-2011, the home's exterior was
renovated to restore the original colors of the paint and
shingled mansard roof; to this day, museum visitors can learn
about the Goodman-LeGrand family while viewing a number of rare
  and historical items; and
WHEREAS, The Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum has
withstood a panorama of change over the course of 162 years, and
it is a pleasure to join in celebrating its long history; now,
  therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
Legislature, hereby commemorate the 162nd anniversary of the
construction of the Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum and extend
to all those associated with the establishment sincere best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for the museum as an expression of high regard from the
  Texas Senate.
