WHEREAS, Shirley Estelle Savage Harris, an esteemed educator and an active and beloved member of the Richmond community, died on December 3, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Harris was born to the late Frederick D. Savage and LaVerna Roane Savage and graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia State University, and Columbia University, where she earned a master's degree in teaching; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Harris returned to Richmond and taught in Richmond Public Schools for 41 years, most of which she spent at William Fox Elementary School, where she was beloved by generations of students and faculty; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Harris was a humble servant and a leader in her community whose mentorship and support was valued by many, and she was regarded as a woman of style and substance in everything she did; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Harris was involved in her community and was initiated into the Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Richmond Chapter of THE MOLES, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by her loving husband, Archie L. Harris, Sr., and her sister, Fredi Savage Eaton, Shirley Harris will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her son, Archie Harris, Jr., and his wife Cheryle Thorne-Harris; her daughter, Kelly Harris-Braxton and her husband George P. Braxton; and her four grandsons, Harris B. Braxton, Miles Q. Braxton, Taylor Mack, and Hunter Mack, as well as her sisters, Sandra S. Mundle and LaVerna S. Johnson; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Shirley Estelle Savage Harris, a cherished member of the Richmond community whose kind and generous spirit brightened countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Shirley Estelle Savage Harris as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory and her many accomplishments.
