WHEREAS, Margaret Louise Lee Hahn, former "First Lady" of Virginia Tech, died on December 10, 2009, at her beloved home, Hickory Hill Farm; and

WHEREAS, a native of DeWitt, Virginia, Margaret Louise Lee (Peggy) Hahn was born on December 17, 1923, to the late Nolie Dillon and Travis Taylor Lee; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn attended public schools in Dinwiddie County and graduated from Madison State Teachers College (now James Madison University) in 1945; she then taught home economics at Bladensburg High School in Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn married the love of her life, T. Marshall Hahn, Jr., on December 27, 1948; they enjoyed a 60-year marriage and had three wonderful children, Elizabeth, Anne, and the late William; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn was a successful and much loved "First Lady" throughout her husband's presidency of Virginia Tech from 1962 until 1974; and

WHEREAS, during Marshall Hahn's presidency, enrollment at Virginia Tech almost tripled; Peggy Hahn supported her husband and the university through entertaining and maintaining relationships with university stakeholders; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn's love and support of gardens and flowers was legendary; the Horticulture Gardens and Pavilion at Virginia Tech were named in her honor in 2004; and

WHEREAS, the embodiment of a gracious lady and consummate hostess, Peggy Hahn spent many years at her husband's side while he served as president and CEO of Georgia Pacific in Portland, Oregon, and Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, after retirement, the Hahns enjoyed traveling around the world, but ultimately returned to Blacksburg and Hickory Hill, which Peggy Hahn often referred to as "the most beautiful place on earth," where her greatest joys were tending her gardens and spending time with her family; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn continued to support Virginia Tech throughout her life as a member of the President's Circle of the Ut Prosim Society, Legacy Society, and Hokie Club; and

WHEREAS, Peggy Hahn loved attending football and basketball games and was especially fond of the Garden Gala held at the Hahn Horticulture Gardens at Virginia Tech each summer; and

WHEREAS, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Peggy Hahn leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, Marshall; daughters, Elizabeth Lee Hahn and Anne Hahn Hurst, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen and "First Lady" of Virginia Tech, Margaret Louise Lee Hahn; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Margaret Louise Lee Hahn as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
