HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 314
Commending The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc.

WHEREAS, for 60 years, The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc., has advocated for the acceptance and inclusion of persons with developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, in 1963, Woodbridge resident Dorothy Bass-Tolberg placed an ad in a local newspaper seeking other families of children with developmental disabilities who were struggling to find educational support; and

WHEREAS, eight local families subsequently joined together in 1964 to establish a children's training center and to incorporate a chapter of the National Association for Retarded Children, which adopted its current name, The Arc, in 1992; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William's center moved in 1967 to the former Bethel School, which was rededicated as the Muriel Humphrey School in honor of a United States senator's wife who advocated for children with developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, over the course of its 60-year history, The Arc of Greater Prince William greatly diversified its offerings and capabilities and now serves more than 2,700 individuals and their families a year through a wide range of programs and events; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William continues to offer developmental childcare at the Muriel Humphrey Childcare Center in Dale City and the Robert Day Childcare Center in Old Town Manassas; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William also serves adults through residential group homes with 24 hour support and, for those able to live semi-independently, provides a supported living program; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William provides vocational training programs, several adult day programs for those adults requiring intensive support, and opportunities for socialization, volunteer work, and community service; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William also offers recreational activities and transportation for individuals and provides educational resources, referral assistance, and other services to families and caregivers; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Greater Prince William has succeeded in its mission to provide opportunities for individuals to achieve their greatest potential for growth and independence and to support their families and caregivers through the dedication of staff members, volunteers, and generous contributions; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc., on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's life-changing service to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
