WHEREAS, improvements in energy efficiency technologies and practices, along with policies enacted around the United States enacted since the 1970s, have resulted in significant energy and cost savings and enhanced the health of Americans; and
WHEREAS, energy efficiency has long been supported by a diverse coalition of businesses, including manufacturers, utilities providers, energy service companies, and technology firms, as well as public interest organizations, environmental and conservation groups, and state and local governments; and
WHEREAS, the average household saves almost $500 every year thanks to efficiency standards that apply to new appliances, such as dishwashers, refrigerators, and water heaters; and
WHEREAS, cutting energy waste saves the consumers of the Commonwealth and the United States billions of dollars on utility bills annually, and energy efficiency itself is an economic engine, supporting job growth nationwide; and
WHEREAS, as American business and industry have evolved to become more innovative and competitive in global markets, they have also become more conscious of energy efficiency, and more than two million individuals are currently employed in the energy efficiency sector in the United States; and
WHEREAS, October has been designated as Energy Awareness Month at the national level and as Energy Conservation Month in Virginia, a day of awareness and action around conserving energy would help to continue lowering costs and improving the health of communities; and
WHEREAS, during Energy Efficiency Day, and every day, Virginians are encouraged to take one or more actions in their homes, workplaces, or schools to reduce energy use, cut costs, and promote a healthier environment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate October 4, in 2024 and in each succeeding year, as Energy Efficiency Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy so that members of the organization may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly's website.
