12101011D WHEREAS, Ulysses Randolph of Roanoke, a devoted husband, loving father, and faithful community volunteer, died on July 24, 2011; and WHEREAS, a graduate of Lucy Addison High School, Ulysses Randolph ably served his country in the United States Army, and, upon his honorable discharge, returned to his hometown of Roanoke; and WHEREAS, a hard-working employee, Ulysses Randolph spent nearly 40 years with the Norfolk and Western Railway while raising his family of 13 children with his late wife, Willie Beatrice Petty Randolph; and WHEREAS, Ulysses Randolph remained active during retirement, involving himself in community affairs as a board member of the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization, Inc. (NNEO); and WHEREAS, committed to the revitalization of the historic Gilmer neighborhood, Ulysses Randolph joined the NNEO in 1980 and worked alongside fellow residents to combat the problems of vacant or deteriorating homes, crime, and inadequate public services; and WHEREAS, Ulysses Randolph provided wise counsel to the organization as it developed a plan of action, formed a crime watch, and partnered with other organizations and local banks to purchase and rehabilitate older homes and buildings; and WHEREAS, today, in part due to the vision and foresight of community leaders such as Ulysses Randolph, the neighborhood has experienced a transition to a more stable community that attracts new residents; and WHEREAS, a 65-year member of Loudon Avenue Christian Church, Ulysses Randolph shared his faith through music as a member of the choir, senior choir, and male chorus and humbly taught Bible school and the Thursday morning Bible class; he also previously served as superintendent of Sunday School; and WHEREAS, a gentleman of tremendous integrity and compassion, Ulysses Randolph greatly enjoyed writing and reciting poetry and lived by the motto of "always help your family and your fellow man"; and WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Willie, Ulysses Randolph will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his 13 children—Alfred, Michael, Reginald, Marvin, Rodney, Phillip, Clinton, Gloria, Regina, Belva, Valerie, Stephanie, and Flora—and their families and his many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Ulysses Randolph; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ulysses Randolph as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
