Senate Concurrent Resolution 535

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXHORTING AND ENCOURAGING ALL FOOT RACE SPONSORS TO ESTABLISH FIVE-YEAR AGE CATEGORIES UP TO AND INCLUDING "80 TO 84" FOR PARTICIPANTS.

WHEREAS, each year, numerous foot races are held in the State of Mississippi, drawing participants from within this state as well as from across the country; and

WHEREAS, age categories for these races are often segmented into five-year increments for younger and middle-aged participants, while grouping all other participants into a broad category of a certain age, usually 65 or 75, and older; and

WHEREAS, race participants in their 80s are generally put at a competitive disadvantage when grouped into a "75+" category with those in their 70s, and even more so when grouped into a "65+" category with those in their 60s and 70s:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we exhort and encourage all foot race sponsors to establish five-year age categories up to and including "80 to 84" for participants.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That it is the intent of the Senate and House of Representatives that this resolution shall not be used in, or be the basis of, any type of litigation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
