AN ACT
amending Title 15, chapter 1, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-118; relating to school curricula.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Title 15, chapter 1, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-118, to read:
15-118. Unstructured recess; requirements; definition
A. Each school district and charter school shall provide no less than a total of fifty minutes of unstructured recess each school day for pupils in kindergarten programs and grades one through five.
B. Unstructured recess time may not be withheld from a pupil as punishment unless the pupil's parent or guardian is notified before the recess time is withheld.
C. Pupils enrolled in half-day kindergarten shall be given no less than a total of twenty-five minutes of unstructured recess.
D. For the purposes of this section, "unstructured recess" means both:
1. A period of time during which an adult or school employee shall not define the social interaction or activities of the pupil except for setting reasonable health and safety restrictions.
