AN ACT

 

amending title 15, chapter 7, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-712.02; relating to school curricula.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1. Title 15, chapter 7, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-712.02, to read:

START_STATUTE15-712.02. Instruction on fetal development; requirements; parental notice and opt out

A. In adopting the course of study and competency requirements pursuant to sections 15-701 and 15-701.01, the state board of education shall require that all health education instruction that is provided to students in grade seven or eight include instruction on fetal development, including both of the following:

1. Information about the human reproductive process, pregnancy and infertility.

2. A description of the growth and development of an unborn child that occurs during each trimester of pregnancy.

B. The state board of education may require that health education instruction that is provided to students in any of grades one through six or nine through twelve include age-appropriate instruction on fetal development as provided in subsection A of this section.

C. At the request of a student's parent, a student shall be excused from instruction on fetal development pursuant to subsection A or B of this section.  Each school district and charter school shall provide a description of the course curriculum to all parents and notify all parents of their ability to withdraw their child from the instruction.
