honoring ibm on its one hundredth anniversary.
(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)
Whereas, on June 16, 2011, IBM will celebrate its one hundredth anniversary, a milestone that is unmatched in the world of business and technology. While countless corporations, technologies and scientific disciplines have risen and disappeared throughout the decades, IBM has persevered; and
Whereas, over the past century, IBM has made technological discoveries and devices that have transformed lives and shaped today's society and business world. From the first electronic calculator and programmable computers to the chip powering the leading gaming consoles, IBM has continually evolved and anticipated the needs of its clients and of citizens around the world; and
Whereas, IBM has a long history of serving the United States government dating back to the early 1900s, when the company pioneered a cutting-edge technology to quickly sort census results; and
Whereas, IBM has distinguished itself as a leader in the corporate world by pioneering many of the 20th century's business management practices, including diversity and accessibility, cross-cultural adaptability and training managers on a massive scale. From building an equal opportunity workforce 11 years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to being the first technology company to acquire a consulting firm, IBM has strived to implement best business practices based on strong leadership, management training and global growth; and
Whereas, with its investment of $6 billion annually in research and development and its employment of more than 400,000 employees globally, IBM continues to shape the way the world works. The company is working to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, digitize health records to improve patient care, improve access to and quality of education, enhance surveillance systems to reduce crime rates, manage power more intelligently and improve the quality and supply of, and access to, water; and
Whereas, IBM's tremendous record of success is due in large part to the talent, passion and excellence of its dedicated employees, including 6,000 workers in the Tucson area, who have worked diligently over the years to build the company into a global technology leader; and
Whereas, through its steadfast commitment to the tenets of good corporate citizenship, environmental responsibility and strong business relationships, IBM has distinguished itself as a good neighbor and outstanding business in the Tucson community and the State of Arizona; and
Whereas, as IBM celebrates 100 years of science and technology breakthroughs, we are certain this exemplary corporation will continue its tradition of developing innovations to address global and challenges for the next 100 years and beyond.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:
That the Members of the Legislature recognize IBM on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and extend best wishes for the company's continued success.
