A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Honoring the anthem veterans' memorial.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, in 2009, retired Rear Admiral Ron Tucker conceptualized the idea of a veterans' memorial in the Arizona community of Anthem.  With the expertise of designer Renee Palmer-Jones and the support of the Anthem Community Council and others in the community, the memorial project progressed from a simple, undefined idea to a stunning tribute to our nation's veterans; and

Whereas, artistic director Renee Palmer-Jones carefully considered every aspect of the memorial to create a classical yet meaningful structure that emphasizes the importance of November 11th.  The end result is a dynamic memorial that is full of significance and is a touching recognition of the millions of men and women who have served in our nation's military over the past two centuries; and

Whereas, the memorial's five pillars represent the five branches of the United States military — the Army, the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force and the Coast Guard.  At precisely 11:11 a.m. on November 11, Veterans Day, the shadows of the pillars will align perfectly to cast one long shadow across the circle of pavers, while sunlight projecting through the pillar's elliptical openings will simultaneously highlight the mosaic of the Great Seal of the United States at the foot of the pillars.  The red, white and blue brick pavers within the Circle of Honor will be inscribed with the names of servicemen and women, symbolizing their support for the pillars; and

Whereas, the men and women of the United States armed forces, both past and present, have diligently served their nation in times of both peace and war through their efforts to provide for the safety, security and well-being of our nation.  These outstanding individuals have shown extraordinary dedication to preserving the freedoms we enjoy and upholding the lofty principles on which this great nation was founded.  The Anthem veterans' memorial is a fitting tribute to the sacrifice and dedication of all United States veterans.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:

1.  That the Legislature recognizes the Anthem veterans' memorial as an outstanding tribute to our nation's veterans and expresses their appreciation to those whose tireless efforts and dedication resulted in the creation of this exceptional memorial.

2.  That the Legislature supports the designation of the Anthem veterans' memorial as a state historical site in concert with the Arizona Centennial celebration.
