A RESOLUTION
on the death of Valerie Scanlan.

Valerie Scanlan passed away on September 13, 2013.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 31, 1952, Valerie Scanlan moved to California after she graduated from high school. Two years later, she met her future husband, Denny Scanlan, and thus began a forty-two-year friendship and love affair that continued for the rest of her life. Always a team, always laughing, always together in business, in Rotary, in life, they traveled the world building relationships and befriending all whom they met. The two of them decided to make Arizona their permanent home.
Committed to making the world a better place, Valerie and her husband began their lifelong Rotary service in 1989. Despite her many personal and professional obligations, Valerie gave selflessly of her time, energy and abilities to benefit Rotary. While earning her bachelor's degree in 1992, in addition to operating their security business, she served as President of the Rio Rico Rotary Club. Making a difference became her mantra. In 2001-2002, Valerie served as District Governor for Southern Arizona (District 5500) and on behalf of the district received the Global Quest Award for Membership Development in Barcelona, Spain. The district placed second that year for contributions to the Rotary Foundation, exceeding the $200,000 goal for the first time in district history.
With her kind heart, warm personality and dynamic mind, Valerie was a key spokesperson for and representative of the Rotary Foundation. Past District Governor Valerie was selected to represent the President of Rotary International on many occasions, at district conferences around the country and at international conventions around the world. From New Orleans to Nashville, Birmingham to Bangkok, the world was her stage. Everyone she ever met was greeted with a warm smile and a firm handshake, and she would remember that person's name from then on. Valerie motivated new club presidents and instilled the spirit of service in new and veteran Rotarians.
Dedicated to her family, Valerie will be deeply missed by her husband of thirty-nine years, Denny Scanlan, brothers, Bruce Stupy (and his wife, Joanne) and Michael Stupy (and his wife, Karen), sisters, Virginia (Ginny) Cooper and Dorothy (Dodie) Brady (and her husband, Mike) and stepmother, Wanita Stupy. Also, Valerie leaves behind three stepchildren, Michael Kevin Scanlan (and his wife, Grace), Brian Patrick Scanlan (and his wife, Mindy) and Erin Kelly Barela (and her husband, Greg), fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved and enjoyed to the fullest.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:
That the Members of the Senate express regret at the passing of Valerie Scanlan and extend their deepest sympathies to her husband, family members and many friends.
