   An act to amend Section 204 of the Code of Civil Procedure,
relating to civil procedure.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   AB 1283, as introduced, Ting. Civil procedure: trial jury
selection.
   Existing law prohibits an eligible person from being exempt from
service as a trial juror by reason of, among other things, economic
status, race, religion, sex, or for any other reason.
   This bill would specify that marital status is also a prohibited
reason to exempt an eligible person from service as a trial juror.
   Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no.
State-mandated local program: no.


THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  SECTION 1.  Section 204 of the Code of Civil Procedure is amended
to read:
   204.  (a)  No   An  eligible person
shall  not  be exempt from service as a trial juror by
reason of occupation, economic  or marital  status, 
or  any characteristic listed or defined in Section 11135
of the Government Code, or for any other reason.  No
  A  person shall  not  be excused from
service as a trial juror except as specified in subdivision (b).
   (b) An eligible person may be excused from jury service only for
undue hardship, upon themselves or upon the public, as defined by the
Judicial Council.
