BILL NUMBER: AB 1984 INTRODUCED BILL TEXT INTRODUCED BY Assembly Member Nielsen FEBRUARY 17, 2010 An act to amend Section 1978 of the Streets and Highways Code, relating to highways. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST AB 1984, as introduced, Nielsen. Highways: county signs: honoring veterans. Existing law authorizes county officials to place and maintain on any state or county highway within their respective jurisdictions, at or near the county line and at county expense, signs stating or adding "Where We Honor Veterans." If located on a state highway, these signs are subject to approval by the Department of Transportation. This bill would include "In Honor of Our Vietnam Veterans" as an alternative or additional statement for these signs. Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: yes. State-mandated local program: no. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Section 1978 of the Streets and Highways Code is amended to read: 1978. (a) County officials, with respect to any state or county highway within their respective jurisdictions and upon a resolution adopted by the respective county board of supervisors, may place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, at or near the county line and at county expense, signs stating or adding to their existing signs either or both of the followingstatement:statements: "In Honor of Our Vietnam Veterans" and "Where We Honor Veterans." (b) Signs or additions to signs described in subdivision (a) that are on a state highway shall only be placed or added to upon the approval of the Department of Transportation.
