   ACR 118, Chesbro. Wineries: leadership.
This measure would proclaim April 2012 as the month to celebrate
the sustainable leadership of California wineries and winegrape
growers.

WHEREAS, California's 3400 wineries and 4600 winegrape growers,
located in 48 of the state's 58 counties, contribute significantly to
the California economy and to the pastoral beauty and appeal of the
state as a place to live, work, and visit; and
WHEREAS, California wineries and vineyards are primarily family
businesses with a long-term commitment to the health and vitality of
their communities and to preserving the land for future generations;
and
WHEREAS, California vintners and growers have broadly embraced a
Code of Sustainable Winegrowing comprised of 227 best practices for
vineyards and wineries that benefit the environment, employees, and
neighbors and the high-quality wine upon which their success is
based; and
WHEREAS, Other state and regional sustainability programs, such as
Lodi Rules, which provided the foundation for the California
Sustainable Winegrowing program (CSWA), as well as Sustainability in
Practice (SIP), Napa Green, Fish Friendly Farming, the Green Business
Program, and others, all play a role in the ever-expanding tapestry
of the California wine communities' efforts to grow grapes and
produce wine that is environmentally sound, economically feasible,
and socially equitable; and
WHEREAS, Growing participation in organic, biodynamic, and
sustainable certification programs further conveys California
vintners' and growers' adherence to high standards and dedication to
continuous improvement; and
WHEREAS, California's wine community conserves water, energy, and
other natural resources, protects habitat, employee welfare, and air,
water, and soil quality, and promotes the use of natural pest
management and alternative energy and fuels; and
WHEREAS, California's sustainable and environmental programs have
been recognized and applauded by state and federal officials and
agencies for their accomplishments and for serving as a model for
wine communities outside of California and for other agricultural
sectors within the state; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims April 2012 as the
month to celebrate the sustainable leadership of California wineries
