This measure would proclaim October 6, 2017, as State Coaches Day.

WHEREAS, Coaches play an important role in their communities and the lives of athletes; and
WHEREAS, Coaches are highly qualified teachers in highly specialized fields. But more than that, they are friends and counselors who help to instill in their players important attitudes that will serve them all of their lives; and
WHEREAS, Coaches who volunteer their time to help educate children serve as role models and, in some situations, are parental surrogates; and
WHEREAS, Sports and coaches help children fight obesity, increase their self-esteem, learn leadership skills, and discover how to incorporate the values of sports into other aspects of their daily lives; and
WHEREAS, Youth sports activity can reduce gang participation and youth violence; and
WHEREAS, Children need adults who will believe in them and who give them the support they need to be successful; and
WHEREAS, The first National Coaches Day was established by President Richard Nixon on October 6, 1972; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, the United States House of Representatives declared the week of September 13, 2009, to September 19, 2009, inclusive, as National Coach Appreciation Week; and
WHEREAS, In California, during the 2016–17 school year, there were a total of 64,456 high school coaches; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims the day of October 6, 2017, as State Coaches Day; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
