   ACR 157, as introduced, Fletcher. California FIRST Day.
   This measure would declare September 15, 2012, to be California
FIRST Day.
   Fiscal committee: no.



   WHEREAS, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology
(FIRST) inspires youth to become science and technology leaders
through the development of science, engineering, and technology
skills; and
   WHEREAS, FIRST mentor-based programs foster well-rounded
capabilities in youth, including self-confidence, communication, and
leadership for participants as young as six years of age; and
   WHEREAS, FIRST values gracious professionalism that is displayed
through unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce
competition by encouraging high-quality work, emphasizing the value
of others, and promoting respect for individuals and the community;
and
   WHEREAS, FIRST's more than 43,000 participants are significantly
more likely to pursue higher education and are more likely to major
in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field; and
   WHEREAS, In 2012, high school pupils participating in a FIRST
program may apply to receive any of 736 individual scholarships worth
over fifteen million dollars ($15,000,000) through a support network
of more than 3,500 corporations, institutions, and individuals; and
   WHEREAS, For the past 20 years, FIRST alumni have become the next
generation of engineers and innovators in California and have
transformed the state's culture and economy; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares September 15, 2012,
to be California FIRST Day; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
