Officer Natalie Corona Memorial Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of Interstate 5 in the County of Colusa as the Officer Natalie Corona Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and the badge of the Davis Police Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, The men and women of law enforcement have the unenviable task of guaranteeing the public’s safety, and it is as difficult and dangerous as it is important, as evidenced by the death of 22-year-old Davis Police Department Officer Natalie Corona who was killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, While handling a three-vehicle minor injury accident on Thursday, January 10, 2019, in Davis, California, Officer Corona was ambushed by a gunman not associated with the accident; and
WHEREAS, Officer Corona was from Arbuckle, California, a long-time employee and volunteer at the Arbuckle Parks and Recreation Department, and was extremely well loved by the Arbuckle community and will be deeply missed; and
WHEREAS, The eldest daughter of a retired Colusa County Sheriff’s Department deputy and an Arbuckle elementary school teacher, Officer Corona dreamed of following her father, who served for 26 years with the department and is now the Colusa County District 1 Supervisor, into a career in law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, After graduating in 2014 from Pierce High School, where she distinguished herself as a dedicated student-athlete and was selected as homecoming queen, Officer Corona earned an associate’s degree in administration of justice from Yuba College and began working as a Community Service Officer for the Davis Police Department in 2016; and
WHEREAS, Even after funding for her position ended, Officer Corona continued to show up to work as a volunteer for her position with the Davis Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Officer Corona graduated from the Sacramento training academy in July 2018, was sworn into the Davis Police Department on August 2, 2018, and completed her field training just before Christmas of 2018; and
WHEREAS, Respected and beloved by her law enforcement peers and the entire Davis community, Officer Corona was described as a rising star within the Davis Police Department who often went out of her way to help those in need, having recently delivered a bag full of presents and packages for a Camp Fire victim out of the goodness of her own heart, among other touching displays of concern for her community; and
WHEREAS, Exemplifying the true character of the brave individuals who devote their time and energy to the perilous duties of law enforcement, Officer Natalie Corona was renowned among her fellow officers for loving, honoring, and being dedicated to her family, the uniform, and the law enforcement community, all of which were indelible and inseparable in her life; and
WHEREAS, Officer Corona leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her parents, Merced and Lupe; her sisters, Jackie, Cathy, and Cindy; a host of devoted family members and friends; and a grateful public; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of Interstate 5 from Greenbay Road OC #15.60, at postmile R3.149, to Salt CR #15-5, at
postmile R7.991, in the County of Colusa as the Officer Natalie Corona Memorial Highway; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and the badge of the Davis Police Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
