   Relative to California Senior Center Month.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   ACR 78, Galgiani. California Senior Center Month.
   This measure would declare the month of November 2011 as
California Senior Center Month in recognition of the importance of
senior centers to California's older adult population.



   WHEREAS, California is home to more than 700 senior centers that
provide a range of information, assistance, and support to the state'
s older adult population; and
   WHEREAS, Senior centers serve California's older adult population
by providing nutritious meals, health care, educational
opportunities, fitness and recreation activities, legal assistance,
social opportunities and community involvement, and more; and
   WHEREAS, Senior centers are a safe and welcoming place where older
Californians can feel connected to their community and obtain
support; and
   WHEREAS, Senior centers are a place for retirees to volunteer
their services and be recognized for their important contributions;
and
   WHEREAS, Senior centers serve as community shelters during times
of natural disaster, providing essential services to the community's
older adult population and others; and
   WHEREAS, In 2009, the California Commission on Aging hosted
California's first statewide Senior Center Stakeholder Forum,
bringing together senior center leaders and staff to explore the
future of senior centers, resource enhancement, community
mobilization, and how to engage the "baby boomer" generation; and
   WHEREAS, The 2009 Senior Center Stakeholder Forum drew
partnerships with the California Senior Legislature, the Congress of
California Seniors, the Triple-A Council of California, the National
Council on Aging, the California Department of Aging, the California
Association of Senior Service Centers, the Aging and Activities
Section of the California Park and Recreation Society, the California
Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the California Association of
Park and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members, and the League
of California Cities; and
   WHEREAS, The California Commission on Aging and partner
organizations will hold a second Senior Center Forum in November
2011, to build on the ongoing interest in senior center innovations
and program development; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares the month of
November 2011 as California Senior Center Month in recognition of the
importance of senior centers to California's older adult population;
and be it further
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
