Relative to the “Surf City USA” interchange.

ACR 87, Ta. “Surf City USA” interchange.
This measure would designate the interchange at State Highway Route 405 and State Route 39 in the County of Orange at Beach Boulevard as the “Surf City USA” interchange. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, In 1991, the City of Huntington Beach adopted the nickname “Surf City USA” to recognize the city’s surf and beach culture; and
WHEREAS, The City of Huntington Beach’s unique location offers consistent waves year round; and
WHEREAS, The City of Huntington Beach is home to over 100 years of surfing history and 10 miles of coastline, including popular surfing spots such as the Huntington Beach Pier, HB Cliffs, Bolsa Chica State Beach, and Huntington State Beach; and
WHEREAS, Surfing is a major part of the City of Huntington Beach’s culture and economy; and
WHEREAS, The City of Huntington Beach’s surf culture is mentioned in popular songs such as “Surf City” by Jan and Dean; and
WHEREAS, The City of Huntington Beach is the home of the US Open of Surfing, the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, the Surfers’ Hall of Fame, and the Surfing Walk of Fame; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the interchange at State Highway Route 405 and State Route 39 in the County of Orange at Beach Boulevard as the “Surf City USA” interchange; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
