BILL NUMBER: HR 36 INTRODUCED BILL TEXT INTRODUCED BY Assembly Member Hill AUGUST 7, 2012 Relative to the California State Highway System. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST HOUSE OR SENATE RESOLUTIONS DO NOT CONTAIN A DIGEST WHEREAS, August 7, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the groundbreaking construction of the California State Highway System in the City of San Bruno, in the County of San Mateo, and it is appropriate to commemorate the anniversary of the commencement of the California State Highway System in the County of San Mateo; and WHEREAS, The recognition of a statewide system of roadways can be traced as far back as 1769, with the blazing of a trail that became the King's Highway, El Camino Real, to facilitate travel between the missions of California; and WHEREAS, On March 27, 1895, the Legislature created the Bureau of Highways, which marked the beginning of a desire to establish a statewide system of navigable roadways; and WHEREAS, The California State Highway System was established as a state highway system by the State Highways Act of 1909, which was ratified by the People of California on November 8, 1910. The California Highway Commission was created to oversee highway construction, maintenance, and control of a state highway system; and WHEREAS, State Highway Project No. 1 was awarded in 1912 by the California Highway Commission, and construction began on August 7, 1912, by Commissioner Burton Towne in the County of San Mateo, in front of historic Uncle Tom's Cabin, on Highway 1, on El Camino Real, at the intersection of San Mateo Avenue and El Camino Real in the City of San Bruno; and WHEREAS, Today the route that began as State Highway Project No. 1, through the County of San Mateo, is designated as State Highway Route 82; and WHEREAS, Today the California State Highway System includes 15,181.36 miles of navigable roads, with more than 14 billion vehicle miles of travel per month, and connecting centers of population throughout the state; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly hereby commemorates the 100th anniversary of the groundbreaking, in the County of San Mateo, of the California State Highway System on August 7, 2012; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
