Relative to Red Nose Day.

HR 40, as amended, Burke.

WHEREAS, In 1985, Comic Relief launched in the United Kingdom for the purpose of using comedy to raise money and help those leading really tough lives and with the goal of creating a just world free from poverty; and
WHEREAS, The very first Red Nose Day was held in 1988. With millions of people participating in its first year, it was clear that a truly amazing movement was underway; and
WHEREAS, With every fundraiser held, television special aired, partner enlisted, and red nose sold, the movement continues to grow. Red Nose Day has raised over $1 billion globally; and
WHEREAS, Since 2015, Red Nose Day in America has raised over $60 million to help kids and young people most in need; and
WHEREAS, Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign run by the nonprofit organization Comic Relief, Inc., a registered United States 501(c)(3) public charity. Comic Relief, Inc., in the United States and Comic Relief in the United Kingdom are independent sister organizations joined by their shared vision of a just world, free from poverty, and the mission to drive positive change through the power of entertainment; and

WHEREAS, From April 17 to June 3, inclusive, Walgreens and Duane Reade locations nationwide will sell red noses for $1 each with all Walgreens’ profits from all sales benefitting the Red Nose Day Fund. Until June 3, 2017, for each red nose purchased, Walgreens will donate $0.50 to the Red Nose Day Fund, which supports programs that help children living in poverty in the United States and internationally; and

WHEREAS, All profits benefit the Red Nose Day Fund, which supports programs that ensure children and young people most in need are safe, healthy, and educated, both in the United States and abroad. Charity organizations supported by the Red Nose Day Fund include Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Charity: Water; Children’s Health Fund; Feeding America; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; National Council of La Raza; Save the Children; LIFT; The Global Fund; Oxfam America; and United Way; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly declares Thursday, May 25, 2017, as Red Nose Day; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
