Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing.
This measure would designate a specified overcrossing on State Route 198 in the City of Lemoore in the County of Kings as the Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz was a graduate of Coalinga High School and West Hills College, where he earned an associate’s degree in criminal justice; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz began his law enforcement career in his hometown of Huron, California, as a reserve police officer with the Huron Police Department where he investigated numerous complex cases and earned Officer of the Year in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz was hired by the Lemoore Police Department in August 2016 and was an asset to the community; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz received numerous commendations from the Lemoore Police Department, including being selected to be the Recruit Training Officer for the Tulare-Kings Counties Basic Peace Officer Academy and a Field Training Officer for the Lemoore Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz displayed an eagerness to go above and beyond on his assigned calls and his thoroughness and outstanding investigative skills resulted in arrests for possession of loaded firearms and controlled substances; and
WHEREAS, In addition to helping to keep the City of Lemoore safe, Officer Jonathan Diaz mentored at-promise youth of Lemoore through the Youth Adult Awareness Program and other programs; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz’s actions, professionalism, and dedication to his duties and to the citizens of Lemoore never went unnoticed; and
WHEREAS, In September 2018, Officer Jonathan Diaz was awarded Lemoore Police Department’s Public Safety Officer of the Year and a couple months later he earned the position of Gang Investigator for the Kings County Major Crimes Task Force; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz was fatally shot while off-duty after he intervened to stop an act of domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz lived in the City of Hanford with his girlfriend Victoria Gonzalez and their 10-month-old daughter Stephanie; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz enjoyed spending time with his two sons, 13-year-old Jonathan Jr. and 8-year-old Damian; and
WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan Diaz was the oldest of four brothers and was a father figure and always wanted to advance his career for the sake of his family; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the 19th Avenue overcrossing on State Route 198 in the City of Lemoore in the County of Kings as the Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with the signage requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
