             HOUSE OR SENATE RESOLUTIONS DO NOT CONTAIN A DIGEST



   WHEREAS, The economic competitiveness of California in the economy
requires a well-educated workforce; and
   WHEREAS, Higher education is more important than ever because it
is an essential step to entering and remaining in the middle class;
and
   WHEREAS, Because of the importance of higher education, California
should expand the opportunity to pursue and attain higher education
degrees to more people than have had that opportunity in the past;
and
   WHEREAS, Public investment in higher education pays off, as
evidenced by the fact that workers with college degrees earn more
money, pay more taxes, and rely less on government services; and
   WHEREAS, Students who experience higher education gain respect,
networking skills, and insight into cutting-edge technology and are
challenged to be more innovative; and
   WHEREAS, Encouraging students of all ages to pursue educational
goals at all levels will prepare the next generation of college
students to be the driving force of California's future economy; and
   WHEREAS, California has lagged behind other states in college
attendance and graduation; and
   WHEREAS, Attending college and graduating with an advanced degree
builds self-esteem, communication skills, discipline, and
perseverance. These qualities make a positive and significant
difference in a person's life and in his or her level of
accomplishments; and
   WHEREAS, By an act of the registrar at National Day Calendar, June
6 was declared National Higher Education Day; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
recognizes California's students, civic leaders, community members,
school administrators, colleges, and universities for their important
contribution in promoting the value of higher education and
therefore recognizes the month of June 2016 as Higher Education
Month; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
