AN ACT CONCERNING THE MAINTENANCE OF HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SPOUSES AND DEPENDENTS OF CERTAIN DECEASED POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS WHO HAVE DIED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:
Section 1. (NEW) (Effective January 1, 2012) (a) Notwithstanding any provision of the general statutes, any charter or special act, a municipality who provides health insurance coverage for any uniformed member of a paid municipal fire department or a regular member of a paid municipal police department shall be liable for the cost of providing equivalent health insurance coverage for the spouse or any dependant child of any uniformed member of a paid municipal fire department or a regular member of a paid municipal police department whose death has been suffered in the line of duty, provided such death occurred on or after January 1, 2012.
(b) If a surviving dependant is a spouse, the cost of such health insurance benefits shall be paid for by the municipality until the spouse dies or remarries. If a surviving dependant is a dependent child, the cost of such health insurance benefits shall be paid for by the municipality until the dependent child reaches twenty-six years of age.
(c) The health insurance coverage provided in this section shall be in addition to any compensation paid to dependants pursuant to section 31-306 of the general statutes.
This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections: | ||

To require municipalities to pay for health insurance coverage for certain dependents of any uniformed member of a paid municipal fire department or a regular member of a paid municipal police department who died in the course of his or her employment.
