HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 23
IN CELEBRATION OF THE 85TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLAYMONT LIONS CLUB.
WHEREAS, in 1917, Chicago Businessman, Melvin Jones, leader of the local Business Circle, decided they should “reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world” to which the members agreed; and
WHEREAS, after contacting other groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held where a constitution, by-laws, objectives and code of ethics were approved, and Lions Clubs were formed, and within three years, the organization became international; and
WHEREAS, twenty civic minded Claymont businessmen came together on March 28, 1938 and formed the Claymont Lions Club to serve the community; and
WHEREAS, it was the first service club of any kind organized in Brandywine Hundred; and
WHEREAS, the Claymont Lions Club has provided continuous service to the Claymont Community and beyond for 85 years through, the Delaware Foundation for Reaching Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities, the Delaware Lions Foundation, Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley, the Claymont Community Center, Knollwood Community Center, scholarships, the Claymont food closet, Boys and Girls Club, Claymont Girls Fastpitch Softball, various civic improvements and the purchase and installation of the ADA accessible playground at Bellevue State park; and
WHEREAS, the Claymont Lions have contributed over $1.7 million to the local community and beyond during their 85 years of service; and
WHEREAS, the Claymont Community, New Castle County, and the State of Delaware have benefited from the influence this organization has exerted through the years, in the many facets of its outreach and practical assistance to mankind; and
WHEREAS, the Claymont Lions Club has followed the Lions Club International motto of “WE SERVE”.
BE IT RESOLVED by and for the House of Representatives of the State of Delaware hereby extends this expression of gratitude and best wishes to the Claymont Lions Club on its 85 th Anniversary for the club’s service to the Claymont Community, New Castle County, the State of Delaware and the international community.

This Concurrent Resolution recognizes 2023 as the 85th Anniversary of the founding of the Claymont Lions Club.
