150th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 30

HONORING THE CAREER AND LIFE OF MICHAEL E. BUSCH, MARYLAND SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE.

WHEREAS, Michael “Mike” Busch served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1986-2019; and

WHEREAS, Michael Busch was elected Speaker of House in 2003, going on to become the longest-serving Speaker in Maryland history; and

WHEREAS, prior to being elected to office, Michael Busch worked as a history teacher and varsity sports coach at St. Mary’s High School; and

WHEREAS, his coach-style leadership caught on in the Maryland General Assembly with lawmakers calling Busch “coach;” and

WHEREAS, inside the halls of the Maryland State House, Speaker Busch was known as a respected dealmaker who strongly believed in consensus-building as the way to solve problems; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Busch was a champion for improved access to health care, working to broaden mandates for insurers well before the Affordable Care Act was signed in to law; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Bush was a champion of the environment and fought to protect the Chesapeake Bay and its ecosystem; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Busch increased diversity among legislative leaders by promoting African Americans and women to various leadership posts; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Busch is known for his leadership and dedication to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, always finding time and resources to support local sports, parks, and arts programs; and

WHEREAS, Speaker Busch is survived by his wife Cynthia Abbot “Cindy” Busch, and his two daughters Erin Busch, Megan Busch, and his three sisters;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives and Senate of the 150 th General Assembly of the State of Delaware honors Speaker Michael Busch’s long dedicated career in public service to the state of Maryland.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all lawmakers are encouraged to emulate Speaker Busch’s consensus-building style to approach differences in opinion respectfully in an attempt to arrive at solutions.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the House prepare and send appropriate copies of this resolution to the Maryland House of Delegates and the Busch family for their records.
