HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34 |
RECOGNIZING JULY 2013 AS LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH IN DELAWARE. |
WHEREAS, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is commonly accompanied by flu-like symptoms that can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart; and
WHEREAS, the most common contraction of Lyme disease is through the bite of a tick; and
WHEREAS, Delaware has the highest incidence of Lyme disease per 100,000 people in the United States; and
WHEREAS, approximately ten to twenty percent of patients treated for Lyme disease with a recommended course of antibiotics will have lingering symptoms of fatigue, pain, or joint and muscle aches, in some cases lasting for months or years after treatment.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 147th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that that we encourage the Department of Public Health to keep Delaware residents properly informed on how to prevent, recognize and treat Lyme disease.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we affirm the importance of Lyme disease awareness and prevention, and hereby designate July 2013 as Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Delaware.
