RECOGNIZING THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF DOVER, 1714-2014. |
WHEREAS, the Presbyterian Church, was well established in the north in New Castle, Delaware; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend Francis Makemie, an Irish clergyman considered to be the founder of Presbyterianism in the United States, was preaching and establishing churches to the south, and it is a certainty Presbyterians in Kent County were desiring a minister; and
WHEREAS, after much expressed interest at the September 7, 1714 meeting of the Presbytery of Philadelphia, taking into consideration the desolate condition of the people of Kent County, brother James Anderson was appointed to supply the people with preaching one Sabbath in the month until the next Presbytery (September 20, 1715).
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 147th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that September 7, 1714 be recognized and celebrated as the organized beginning of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State of Delaware congratulates the Presbyterian Church of Dover for its continued and meaningful service to the people of Kent County as the church's 300th anniversary is celebrated on September 7, 2014.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitably prepared copy of this resolution be presented to Pastor Mary Baber Reed of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
