RECOGNIZING APRIL 13, 2016 AS "DELAWARE STANDS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING DAY" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE IN SUPPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE MISSION'S STUDENT CHAPTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE. |
WHEREAS, 29.8 million people are enslaved in some form today, including domestic servitude, forced labor, child labor, and sex trafficking; and
WHEREAS, according to the United Nations, human trafficking involves "the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation"; and
WHEREAS, human trafficking is an estimated $32 billion industry worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the International Justice Mission is a "human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression" fighting injustice and violence against the poor worldwide, giving a voice to those who need one the most, but all too often go unheard; and
WHEREAS, the International Justice Mission has rescued more than 25,000 people from various forms of violence and oppression; helping to protect 21 million individuals from violence worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the International Justice Mission's student chapter at the University of Delaware has advocated for and brought awareness to the reprehensible realities of human trafficking and modern day slavery worldwide; and
WHEREAS, in 2015 there were 28 calls to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline in Delaware reporting 5 human trafficking cases, 3 sex trafficking cases, 2 labor trafficking; and
WHEREAS, these calls came from locations including Rehoboth Beach, Newark, Wilmington, and Dover, affecting every county of the State of Delaware; and
WHEREAS, public awareness is an imperative step towards ending human trafficking and helping victims rebuild their lives; and
WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes the atrocities of human trafficking and modern day slavery; and
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware that we hereby recognize April 13, 2016, as "Delaware Stands Against Human Trafficking Day" in acknowledgment of the heinous realities of human trafficking and modern day slavery.
SYNOPSIS
This Resolution recognizes the day of April 13, 2016 as "Delaware Stands Against Human Trafficking Day" in the State of Delaware in support of The International Justice Mission's student chapter at the University of Delaware and to raise awareness of the atrocities of human trafficking and modern day slavery. |
