SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 69

DESIGNATING MAY 22, 2016 AS "DELAWARE CONSERVATION DAY" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, in the residential sector alone, Delaware residents emitted 900,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel consumption in 2013 (US Energy Information Administration); and

WHEREAS, through education and a determined day to reflect on pollutants, residents will be encouraged each year to monitor their pollution, and may be surprised at how much they contribute to landfills and CO2 emissions; and

WHEREAS, each gallon of gasoline used in automobiles emits around 19 pounds of carbon dioxide; and

WHEREAS, 304 pounds of CO2 have been emitted each time a person goes back to fill up a 16 gallon tank; and

WHEREAS, the average American produces 4.3 pounds of trash every day (EPA); and

WHEREAS, by dedicating one day a year to understanding this amount and how to counteract the pollution could help reduce our State's greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2030, a goal set by The Climate Framework for Delaware; and

WHEREAS, Americans make up about 5% of the world's population, but use about 26% of its oil and 27% of its natural gas (Worldwatch Institute - The State of Consumption Today).

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that May 22, 2016, shall be recognized as "Delaware Conservation Day" in the State of Delaware, encouraging residents to track their pollution output (plastics, CO2, cleaning agents, sprays, etc.), and inform residents on how to counter this pollution.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this day will be exactly one month from Earth Day to reinvigorate residents' passion for their environment and help students remain conscious of their pollution over summer vacations.
