DELAWARE STATE SENATE

148th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 78

RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MAY 2016 AS "HEALTHY VISION MONTH".



WHEREAS, during Healthy Vision Month, the National Eye Institute (NEI) reminds individuals to prioritize eye health and protect their sight; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 61 million adults in the United States are at a high risk for vision loss; and

WHEREAS, approximately 38 million people nationwide are suffering from eye disease, including glaucoma, diabetes retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts; and

WHEREAS, as of 2010, there have been 272,145 cases of vision problems in Delawareans over the age of 40; and

WHEREAS, 12,350 people over the age of 40 in Delaware suffer from vision impairment or blindness; and

WHEREAS, eye disease and visual impairment is a national health concern that negatively impacts physical and mental health; and

WHEREAS, individuals with sight loss are at a high risk for chronic health problems, depression, accidents, and mortality; and

WHEREAS, the National Eye Institute (NEI) recommends that individuals get regular dilated eye exams, live healthy lifestyles, use protective eyewear, and wear sunglasses to protect against vision loss and eye disease; and

WHEREAS, approximately 10% of adults in the United States have never had an eye exam; and

WHEREAS, regular dilated eye exams can detect eye disease and vision problems in the early stages when they are easiest to treat; and

NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware,the House concurring therein, that May 2016 is recognized as "HealthyVision Month" and all citizens of Delaware are urged to recognize this event and participate fittingly in its observance.


SYNOPSIS

This resolution recognizes the month of May 2016 as "Healthy Vision Month" in the State of Delaware.
