DELAWARE STATE SENATE

148th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 94

COMMEMORATING JULY 1, 2016 AS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.



WHEREAS, the Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles in World War 1, and produced some of the largest causalities of any battle in the war; and

WHEREAS, the Somme Campaign was the first British offensive in World War 1 and the first offensive against the Central Powers; and

WHEREAS, the battle began near the Somme River in France and lasted a total of four months; and

WHEREAS, the battle cost the Allies and Central Powers a total of 1.5 million lives; and

WHEREAS, the Battle of the Somme allowed the British to improve their warfare technology and thus contributed to their success later in the war; and

WHEREAS, the battle claimed the life of the first American Soldier of World War 1, Harry Butters, a San Francisco native who was hit by a German shell while trying to secure a small town in France; and

WHEREAS, the battle started on July 1st 1916 and 57,470 British soldiers were killed or injured on that day alone.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme is hereby commemorated on July 1st, 2016.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitably prepared copy of this Resolution shall be presented to the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Washington D.C. upon its enactment.


SYNOPSIS

This Resolution commemorates July 1, 2016 as the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme.
