Florida Senate - 2015 SB 148 By Senator Ring 29-00216-15 2015148__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to resident status for tuition 3 purposes; amending s. 1009.21, F.S.; revising criteria 4 relating to the classification of active duty members 5 of the Armed Services of the United States, and their 6 spouses and dependent children, as residents for 7 tuition purposes; classifying veterans of the Armed 8 Services of the United States, and their spouses and 9 dependent children, as residents for tuition purposes 10 under certain circumstances; providing an effective 11 date. 12 13 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 14 15 Section 1. Paragraphs (a) and (b) of subsection (10) of 16 section 1009.21, Florida Statutes, are amended to read: 17 1009.21 Determination of resident status for tuition 18 purposes.—Students shall be classified as residents or 19 nonresidents for the purpose of assessing tuition in 20 postsecondary educational programs offered by charter technical 21 career centers or career centers operated by school districts, 22 in Florida College System institutions, and in state 23 universities. 24 (10) The following persons shall be classified as residents 25 for tuition purposes: 26 (a) Active duty members of the Armed Services of the United 27 Statesresiding or stationed in this state, and their spouses,28 and dependent children, and active drilling members of the 29 Florida National Guard. 30 (b) VeteransActive duty membersof the Armed Services of 31 the United States, and their spouses and dependent children, who 32 initially apply to an institution of higher education within 4 33 years after the servicemember’s honorable discharge from the 34 Armed Services of the United Statesdependents attending a35Florida College System institution or state university within 5036miles of the military establishment where they are stationed, if37such military establishment is within a county contiguous to38Florida. 39 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2015.
