    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to resident status for tuition
    3         purposes; amending s. 1009.21, F.S.; prohibiting a
    4         dependent child who is a United States citizen from
    5         being denied classification as a resident for tuition
    6         purposes based solely upon the citizenship status of
    7         his or her parent; requiring the State Board of
    8         Education to adopt rules and the Board of Governors of
    9         the State University System to adopt regulations;
   10         providing an effective date.

   12  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   13  
   14         Section 1. Paragraph (d) is added to subsection (2) of
   15  section 1009.21, Florida Statutes, and subsection (13) of that
   16  section is amended, to read:
   17         1009.21 Determination of resident status for tuition
   18  purposes.—Students shall be classified as residents or
   19  nonresidents for the purpose of assessing tuition in
   20  postsecondary educational programs offered by charter technical
   21  career centers or career centers operated by school districts,
   22  in Florida College System institutions, and in state
   23  universities.
   24         (2)
   25         (d) A dependent child who is a United States citizen may
   26  not be denied classification as a resident for tuition purposes
   27  based solely upon the citizenship status of his or her parent.
   28         (13) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules and the
   29  Board of Governors shall adopt regulations rules to implement
   30  this section.
   31         Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
