Florida Senate - 2012 (NP) SR 1140 By Senator Latvala 16-00963-12 20121140__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the 3 inauguration of Bob Martinez as Florida’s 40th 4 Governor. 5 6 WHEREAS, Bob Martinez was born on December 25, 1934, and 7 was raised in Tampa by his parents Serafin and Ida Carreno 8 Martinez, and 9 WHEREAS, Bob Martinez attended Tampa Bay Boulevard 10 Elementary School, MacFarland Junior High, and Thomas Jefferson 11 High School in Tampa, and 12 WHEREAS, in 1957, Bob Martinez earned an undergraduate 13 degree in Social Science from the University of Tampa and, in 14 1964, received a postgraduate degree in Labor and Industrial 15 Relations from the University of Illinois, and 16 WHEREAS, in 1979, Bob Martinez was elected Mayor of Tampa 17 and, in 1983, was reelected to a second term, and 18 WHEREAS, on September 6, 1986, Bob Martinez received the 19 majority of votes in a crowded Republican primary, and on 20 November 4, 1986, he became the first Hispanic Governor of 21 Florida and only the second Republican Governor of this state 22 since Reconstruction, and 23 WHEREAS, on January 6, 1987, Bob Martinez was inaugurated 24 as Florida’s 40th Governor, serving this state honorably 25 throughout his 4 years in office, and 26 WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Governor Bob Martinez are 27 numerous and include the creation of Preservation 2000, the 28 largest land acquisition program in the nation, now known as 29 Florida Forever; the creation of the Governor’s Commission on 30 Space, the Florida Turnpike Authority, and the Florida Prepaid 31 College Program; implementation of Florida’s first comprehensive 32 growth management law and the Florida Lottery; and advocacy on 33 behalf of Florida’s 10th public university, Florida Gulf Coast 34 University, and 35 WHEREAS, Governor Bob Martinez has left an indelible impact 36 on the State of Florida, NOW, THEREFORE, 37 38 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 39 40 That the members of the Senate recognize January 6, 2012, 41 as the 25th Anniversary of the inauguration of Governor Bob 42 Martinez and pay tribute to this dedicated public servant.
