Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1666 By Senator Farmer 34-01524-18 20181666__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing January 12, 2018, as “Student 3 Mental Health Day” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, students are one of Florida’s greatest assets, and 6 state universities and Florida College System institutions 7 strive to support students during their studies at the state’s 8 postsecondary institutions, and 9 WHEREAS, a study by Emory University revealed that, each 10 year, more than 1,000 students nationwide commit suicide on 11 college campuses, and 12 WHEREAS, according to the American College Health 13 Association’s Spring 2014 National College Health Assessment, 14 17.5 percent of college students were diagnosed with anxiety, 12 15 percent of college students were diagnosed with depression, and 16 91.6 percent reported feeling overwhelmed by the expectations of 17 college, and 18 WHEREAS, for every student diagnosed with depression or 19 anxiety, there are countless others afraid to come forward 20 because of social repercussions associated with seeking mental 21 health support, and 22 WHEREAS, the state’s colleges and universities were built 23 to be havens of knowledge, opportunity, and success for all who 24 seek them and should strive to provide students with the support 25 they need, including mental health support and services, as 26 students work to meet their goals while attending the state’s 27 postsecondary institutions, NOW, THEREFORE, 28 29 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 30 31 That in recognition of the need to support the mental 32 health of the state’s postsecondary students, January 12, 2018, 33 is recognized as “Student Mental Health Day” in Florida.
