Florida Senate - 2023 (NP) SR 1692 By Senator Gruters 22-02285-23 20231692__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing March 11, 2023, as 3 “Narcolepsy Awareness Day” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder 6 caused by the brain’s inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles, 7 and 8 WHEREAS, narcolepsy is an underrecognized and 9 underdiagnosed condition that affects an estimated 1 in every 10 2,000 Americans, and 11 WHEREAS, when undiagnosed, narcolepsy can lead to 12 accidents, injuries, and problems with learning and employment, 13 and 14 WHEREAS, narcolepsy affects individuals of all ages 15 neurologically, socially, and emotionally, with onset typically 16 occurring between the ages of 15 and 25 years, and 17 WHEREAS, on average, narcolepsy is diagnosed 6 years after 18 the onset of symptoms, and those who have the condition have an 19 increased prevalence of high blood pressure, cardiovascular 20 disease, and diabetes, and 21 WHEREAS, individuals with narcolepsy need trained providers 22 who will address their comorbidities and treat any additional, 23 underlying health concerns, and 24 WHEREAS, the Narcolepsy Network is a national organization 25 created to promote awareness of the disease and provide support 26 for those who suffer from narcolepsy, NOW, THEREFORE, 27 28 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 29 30 That March 11, 2023, is recognized as “Narcolepsy Awareness 31 Day” in Florida.
