Florida Senate - 2020 (NP) SR 1894 By Senator Berman 31-01002-20 20201894__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing April 19 through April 26, 3 2020, as the “Days of Remembrance” and Tuesday, April 4 21, 2020, as “Holocaust Memorial Day” in Florida. 5 6 WHEREAS, between 1933 and 1945, the Holocaust, the state 7 sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European 8 Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, resulted in the 9 murder of 6 million Jewish people, and 10 WHEREAS, in addition, the Romani people, also known as 11 Gypsies, and Polish people were targeted for decimation on the 12 basis of race, ethnicity, or nation of origin, and millions of 13 others, including persons with disabilities, Jehovah’s 14 Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, political dissidents, and 15 homosexuals, suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi 16 tyranny, and 17 WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity 18 to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, 19 societies, and governments to remain vigilant against hatred, 20 persecution, and tyranny, and 21 WHEREAS, pursuant to an act of the United States Congress, 22 Public Law No. 96-388, which was signed into law on October 7, 23 1980, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council has 24 designated April 19 through April 26, 2020, as the “Days of 25 Remembrance” for the victims of the Holocaust, including 26 “Holocaust Memorial Day,” also known as Yom HaShoah, on Tuesday, 27 April 21, 2020, and 28 WHEREAS, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in 29 honor of its survivors, and in utmost gratitude for the risks 30 taken by rescuers and liberators, the residents of this state 31 are encouraged to rededicate themselves to the principles of 32 human dignity and to individual freedom in a just society, 33 thereby ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated, NOW, 34 THEREFORE, 35 36 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 37 38 That April 19 through April 26, 2020, is recognized as the 39 “Days of Remembrance” and Tuesday, April 21, 2020, is recognized 40 as “Holocaust Memorial Day” in Florida.
