Florida Senate - 2020 (NP) SR 1906 By Senator Broxson 1-02965-20 20201906__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution commending the University of West Florida 3 Argonauts football team for winning the 2019 NCAA 4 Division II Football Championship. 5 6 WHEREAS, the University of West Florida Argonauts football 7 team completed the 2019 regular season with an 8-2 record, 8 qualifying for the National Collegiate Athletic Association 9 (NCAA) Division II national championship playoffs, and 10 WHEREAS, the Argonauts football team began its playoff 11 journey, nicknamed the “Trap Tour,” by completing one of the 12 most remarkable postseason feats in NCAA football history, 13 defeating three number 1 seeds, including the defending national 14 champion, and ending the three longest home field winning 15 streaks in NCAA Division II football, and 16 WHEREAS, this historic feat qualified the Argonauts to 17 compete for the NCAA Division II Football Championship just 4 18 years after the founding of the team, making the Argonauts the 19 first team in NCAA Division II football history to qualify to 20 play in the national championship in so short a period of time, 21 and 22 WHEREAS, on December 21, 2019, in McKinney, Texas, the 23 Argonauts defeated the Minnesota State University football team, 24 ending one of the longest winning streaks in NCAA Division II 25 football and claiming their first NCAA Division II Football 26 Championship for the Argonauts, and 27 WHEREAS, Argonauts wide receiver Quentin Randolph had 10 28 receptions for a school record of 254 yards and tied the NCAA 29 Division II Football Championship game receiving record with 30 three touchdowns, and 31 WHEREAS, Argonauts wide receiver Tate Lehito had 13 32 receptions and set the NCAA Division II Football Championship 33 game receiving record with 139 yards and one touchdown, and 34 WHEREAS, Argonauts quarterback Austin Reed finished with a 35 school and NCAA Division II Football Championship game record of 36 523 passing yards and six passing touchdowns, and 37 WHEREAS, the Argonauts football team is the only team in 38 the State University System to earn a national football 39 championship title for the 2019 season, NOW, THEREFORE, 40 41 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 42 43 That the University of West Florida Argonauts football team 44 is commended for winning the 2019 NCAA Division II Football 45 Championship. 46 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be 47 presented to University of West Florida President Martha D. 48 Saunders, Director of Athletics Dave Scott, Head Coach Pete 49 Shinnick, and Assistant Head Coach Steve Saulnier as a tangible 50 token of the sentiments expressed herein.
